My goal was to get people to hear Bach. And there is no more democratic environment than the New York City subways. Like everybody, every possible conceivable type of person is in the New York City subways. It seemed like really fertile ground, the perfect place to show up with Bach and say here’s Bach everyone. Because everybody’s gonna hear it. And it just made sense.
So I began playing Bach in the Subways, just me in 2010. And I did this two to three times a week most weeks for a few years. That was the beginning.
On March 21st 2011, three cellist played Bach in the subways of New York City. On March 21st, 2015, thousands of musicians in 130 cities in 40 countries in 6 continents did the same thing.
Bach in the Subways is about bringing Bach’s music and by extension classical music to as many people around the world as possible.
I mean an effort on the scale is the work of thousands of people.
That happened in Lviv, that happened in Chihuahua, Mexico, that happened in obviously Los Angeles, Seattle, Seoul, all over the world.
Bach in the Subways Day in 2015 has to have been the day in human history when more Bach was played and listened to than ever before.
I want to do, I want to do it again and I want to do it better and bigger. I think that’s my objective goal.
How many continents?
We had six, so we need someone in the Anartic – is that a continent? I don’t know.
